New technologies, clean energy vs. supercharged engines and insane speed, here are some major differences between Formula E and Formula 1. Since the creation of Formula E by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) in 2014, this category has been steadily gaining momentum. Powered only by electricity, the cars split the air in relative silence on the asphalt. The e-sector is an ideal playground for manufacturers looking to differentiate themselves from the competition. By investing in clean energy, they can also develop new technologies and concepts. A little game of the ten differences between these two sports: 1 - The engine: Formula E cars are electric, F1 cars run on oil. The second engines are V6 90° hybrids that combine the elements of internal combustion (gasoline) with electric features, such as the use of batteries and the energy recovery system (ERS). Formula E cars are simply equipped with a battery. They swing a maximum discharge of 250kW - the equivalent of 335 horsepower - in qualifying and 200kW in racing, which is a whopping 268 horsepower. 2 - The dimensions : An F1 chassis, made of carbon fiber, can't be more than 2m wide and 96cm high. There is no restriction on the length, but it's roughly around 5 meters. On the Formula E version, the chassis is made of aluminum and carbon fiber. Its dimensions? About 5m long, 1.8m wide and 1.25 high. 3 - Weight: When empty, F1 cars weigh 768 kg on the scale. Formula E cars are heavier and weigh about 900 kg. This is partly explained by the weight of the battery alone, which can reach 385 kg. 4 - Speed: Without much surprise F1 barzans at nearly 400 km/h (the speed record, held by South African Alan van der Merwe and recognized by the FIA, is 397 km/h). The Formula E reaches to this day the 225 km/h. 5 - The competition format: A Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place from Friday to Saturday. Formula E takes place in one day - Saturday - with two practice sessions, qualifying and the ePrix. Count on 80 to 120 minutes of thrills for F1 and just under an hour for Formula E. 6. Scoring: Both categories have the same system for earning points. The first driver to cross the line wins 25 points, the second 18 and so on until the 10th which gives: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. But Formula E also benefits from bonus points. The driver who maintains the pole position gets three extra points. And if you complete the fastest lap in qualifying... an extra point. 7 - Tires: Whether it's raining, windy, snowing or the sun is drying out the track, the F1 cars are ready. In the store, there are 5 types of tires ranging from ultra soft, super soft, soft, medium to hard, plus an intermediate option. In addition, drivers must use at least two types of tires per GP. In Formula E, there is a single type of hybrid tire, regardless of the conditions. 8 - The pit stop: In F1, the technical teams must respect a minimum time of 0.2 seconds between the last nut lap on the single-seaters and the authorization to restart. In Formula E, there is no minimum time and the drivers change cars outright (the batteries last 25 minutes). 9 - Costs: A Formula E season costs 20 million euros per team on average, while each F1 team spends 145 (the budget is capped). 10 - The number of races: F1 drivers have about 20 race weekends per year (the number varies depending on the year and pandemics).
